COPA CURIOSA

Curious Sips. Spanish Stories.

Why Spain? Perhaps the question is why not Spain?

Most of us, when we’re Browse for a new bottle or ordering a glass of wine, probably find ourselves reaching for something from France or Italy. It’s a subconscious thing—those regions are classics, and we know we’re in safe hands. But what if you’re missing out on a world of amazing, affordable wines?

Now, I’ll admit, my own observations might be a little biased, but after digging into some articles from 2022 and 2023, it seems I’m not the only one who thinks Spanish wines are seriously underrated.

Before that some quick facts:

So, Why Aren’t We Drinking More Spanish Wine?

I asked this question to everyone I could—from local winemakers and shop owners to friendly bartenders—and a few themes kept popping up.

1. They’re Almost Too Affordable

Spanish wines offer incredible value. You can find a beautifully aged red for under €10 or a crisp Chardonnay for even less. But here’s the catch: because they’re so affordable, we often assume they’re inferior. We equate a higher price tag with better quality, and Spanish wines suffer from this perception. It’s a shame, because you can find some true gems at an unbeatable price.

2. The Siesta Culture Isn’t Just a Myth

Spain is famous for its siestas, and while that’s not the only reason, it does hint at a different cultural focus. The locals are more about enjoying life than marketing their wines to the world. While names like Rioja and Ribera del Duero are well-known, many of Spain’s other incredible regions and native grapes remain hidden gems. With over 400 indigenous grape varieties, Spain has so much to offer, but a lack of consistent branding makes it tough for consumers to know where to start.

3. It’s Hard to Learn About Them

When was the last time you saw a book dedicated entirely to Spanish wine? Exactly. There’s a notable lack of up-to-date English resources, especially when compared to the mountains of information available on French wines. This knowledge gap makes it harder for Spanish wines to build the prestige and recognition they deserve.

So, why aren’t you drinking more Spanish wine?

Honestly, it’s this exact question that inspired us to start Copa Curiosa. We’re on a mission to introduce you to the bottles, regions, and stories that make Spain one of the most exciting wine countries in the world. No snobbery, no complicated jargon—just pure curiosity, good vibes, and seriously good wine.
